Job Skills / Requirements


The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring building systems and equipment are running at optimal levels throughout the facility. They will coordinate maintenance activities with vendors and perform routine preventative maintenance tasks and repairs to include plumbing, carpentry, equipment repair, and basic electrical. Additionally, the Maintenance Engineer will also assist in securing required permits, manage hazardous materials, maintain facility emergency devices, operate industrial equipment/machinery and may perform basic custodial duties such as sweeping, cleaning, and trash removal.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure all facility systems and other equipment are performing at optimal levels by performing routine preventive maintenance addressing underlying issues and performing the necessary repairs and/or adjustments.
  • Maintain all utilities systems for electricity, water, steam, gas, oil, compressed air, communications and data networks.
  • Coordinate and oversee vendor services to ensure activities are performed according to contract.
  • Assist with securing all required permits and coordination/liaison with local authorities to ensure compliance with applicable codes and building regulations.
  • Coordinate with ESSH staff to maintain a safe work environment by following through on assigned safety tasks, performing ergonomic evaluations and managing necessary accommodations.
  • Able and willing to work off hours during emergencies.
  • May perform some custodial tasks as needed.
  • Able and willing to work on-call as needed to ensure continuous operation of facilities and respond to other critical issues

        Skills Required
        • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and follow through on all tasks from start to finish.
        • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of employees, external contractors and regulatory authorities.
        • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
        • Skilled in using machine tools, hand power tools, voltmeter, ampmeter, micrometer, calipers, tachometer, handtruck, oscilloscope and welding equipment
        • Demonstrated ability working with budgets and identify cost-savings
        • Demonstrated ability to read and understand manuals and schematics
        • Ability to apply mechanical, electrical and electronic knowledge to a wide variety of equipment.
          Education and Experience Required
          • HS degree or equivalent required; Associates degree in a related field is desirable.
          • 5 - 7 years of related experience
          • HVAC or Boiler license is desirable.

            • Occasional, represents 1 to 33% or 1-2 hours of an 8 hour work day.
            • Frequently, represents 34 to 66% or 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours of an 8 hour work day.
            • Regularly, represents 67 to 100% or 6 to 8 hours of an 8 hour work day.
              There will be exposure to loud noise while working in plant facilities. There will be some exposure to some hazardous materials while managing hazardous substance/waste as part of the job.
