Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1 years
Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants
who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered. This
contract opportunity is for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist
(OMS) at a school setting in Spruce Pine, NC. The ideal candidate
will have specialized skills in guiding and supporting individuals
with visual impairments to navigate their environments safely and
independently. Key Responsibilities: Assessing students'
orientation and mobility skills and developing personalized
learning plans Teaching safe travel techniques using a cane, human
guide, or other mobility tools Collaborating with educators,
parents, and support staff to integrate O&M strategies into
daily routines Conducting environmental assessments to identify and
mitigate mobility barriers Providing training and resources to
enhance students' independence in indoor and outdoor settings
Documenting progress and maintaining clear communication with
school personnel and families Qualifications: Certification or
licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
Experience working in educational environments with children or
young adults with visual impairments Strong knowledge of
orientation and mobility techniques and assistive technologies
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with
students, families, and multidisciplinary teams Ability to work
independently and manage caseload efficiently Commitment to
